Links Management Script (Lite Version)

Version 2/3 for Perl/UNIX
Revised 01/04

Thank you for using Linking101's Link Management Script.

This readme file should contain all the information needed to get the script up and running on your site. Linking101 can install this Lite Version for you-please email your installation request or any questions or problems you have to scripts@linking101.com and indicate it is regarding the Linking101 Link Management Script.

Requirements/Installation:
This script is written in Perl, a very powerful programming language. This script was written to work exclusive on UNIX servers and will not work correctly on Win32 platforms. Before contacting Linking101 with any problems, make sure you have checked with your web hosting company to see that they are using UNIX and support Perl and have cgi-bin access.

Installation simply involves configuring the files with your information, creating links to the linkspage from your main website page(s), and then uploading the files to your web hosting company's Internet server. Once online, all administrative functions can be done online.

Directions:

1. Unzip the files onto your computer's hard drive. We use WinZip. When they are extracted, it will create a folder on your hard drive named "resources" and place all the files into it.

2. You need to make sure that the first line of all the .cgi files point to the correct path to perl on your server. The default is #!/usr/bin/perl and should work fine on almost all unix servers. If not, check with your web hosting company on the correct path.

3. Open the config.cgi file using Notepad and change the following: These modifications are all that is necessary to have the script work properly.

4. After making the necessary modifications, save the config.cgi file. (Over write the existing file)

5. FTP into your server and create a folder in your home directory or in your cgi-bin folder. Name it "resources" (without the quotes).
Chmod the folder to 777 or 755. Some UNIX servers don't allow chmodding of directories to 777 due to security risks.

7. Upload all the files to the links folder in ASCII mode.

8. Chmod all .cgi files to 755 and users.txt to 777.

9. Create a link on your existing web site page(s) to allow visitors to access your links section. The link should be "http://www.yourdomain.com/resources/linkspage.cgi" or "http://www.yourdomain.com/cgi-bin/resources/linkspage.cgi" depending on the location of your links directory.

10. To login at the administrator, point your browser to "http://www.yourdomain.com/resources/admin.cgi?login" or "http://www.yourdomain.com/cgi-bin/resources/admin.cgi?login" depending on location. Use the password you've set in config.cgi to get access to the admin area. DO NOT PUT THIS LINK on your website anywhere! Create a shortcut to it in your favorites for easy access to it.

11. After uploading the files, check to make sure all links work. If not, check your information in the config.cgi file. If you are still having problems scripts@linking101.com.

NOTE: When you upgrade, you will have to update all files (except for the user.txt and config.cgi files) in your Resource folder, make sure they have the proper permissions, and then change the link to your link section to be- http://www.yourdomain.com/resources/. It is that simple.

Using the Script:

Once the script is up and running your visitors will be able to view your complete database of organized links and add their own. To add their link, they will click on "Add link" on the linkspage.cgi. Your link information and a form for them to submit their information will appear on addlink.cgi. Once the form is filled out, it is processed. "Processing the form" entails their link information being added to your database, their link appearing on the linkspage.cgi and an email being sent to them and to you the administrator informing you a new link has been added for you to review.

To review any and all links, you need to login into the Administrative Section of the Link Management Script. As was mentioned before, it is recommended that you DO NOT put a link to your administrative anywhere on your website.

Once you login as the administrator you will see options:
